Καλό Δεκαπενταύγουστο

Today all of Greece is celebrating. The fifteenth of August is a major feast day, and the biggest celebration of the summer. A memory from my first δεκαπενταύγουστο (theka-pend-avgousto)…

My family and I are sitting on chairs on a farm wagon pulled by a tractor. We’re heading to a village nearby my grandparents’ village for a night of feasting and dancing.

We arrive in the village, unload the chairs, arrange them around tables in the village square, and join in the festivities alongside all the others who have also brought their own chairs.

Another popular mode of transportation in the village at that time was donkey, for people, farm products, and other heavy things. On that visit, I remember feeling as if I had been transported back in time.
